About a month ago I went to go see Georgia College's production of the musical "Heathers". I had been wanting to see this musical for a long time, and let me tell you the wait was well worth it. "Heathers" the musical is based off of the classic 80's movie about a girl named Veronica who wants to be popular in high school. The musical goes off of this plot and adds great songs that go along with the original movie's storyline. The song I am telling you guys about today is "You're Welcome" from the music writers Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy. The song starts when Veronica is left in a cow pasture with two football players who are trying to get her to have sex with them. I think that in this song the guys are blaming Veronica for their sexual urges because of the way she dresses.
The football players Ram and Kurt are trying to get Veronica to join a threesome with them, and they blame their urges on the way Veronica dresses herself. In the beginning of the song it goes like this:
[VERONICA, spoken]
Dressed like what? This is what I always wear
[KURT, spoken]
Yeah and it's torture!
[RAM, spoken]
How can you expect us to control ourselves when you look like that?
These lyrics show that Veronica is trying to leave the dangerous situation involving the two men, but they are keeping her from getting to her car. They comment on what she is wearing because it is sexy and Veronica tries to save herself by saying it's what she wears everyday. She says this to show them they are being ridiculous because they see her everyday in the same outfit. Kurt and Ram also blame her for their sexual desires when they sing this verse:
[RAM]
Come back girl, now don’t play hurt
When Ram says, "Come back girl, now don't play hurt.." He is calling Veronica out for being upset that she is being "drooled over" by them because he thinks she is asking for all of the attention because of her outfit. He then proceeds by saying, "If you don't want me starin', why you wearing that skirt?" This verse goes along with the first one mentioning her outfit choice and they way the men are acting. The men don't blame themselves for their sexual desires, they only blame Veronica for dressing the way she does. Sadly, this happens too much in our society now. Women are shamed for what they wear because onlookers think they are asking for sexual attention if they dress a certain way. Hopefully in the near future, men will realize that women can have the ability to dress however they want without the unwanted attention of men.
