In the film, Wonder Woman 2017 by Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot, you can see right away that the film represents women empowerment and femininity in that the lead character is a women playing the role of a superhero, whereas most roles related to this one have been played by men. In this film Wonder Woman basically fights crime and saves America. As stated based on the older film of Wonder Woman, in her earliest interations, Wonder Woman was an all-American figure with a mythical background, here, she’s an essentially mythical force who just happens to fight for America”. Based on the change between the character in the older film to this newer one, you can see that they made Wonder Woman into more of a meaningful hero with more accomplishments and essentially, more power. In talking about this character, “women safeguarding the world from male violence not with nurture but with better violence, is a feminist act”. This film has helped to shed light to the fact that women are just as powerful as men, if not more. Like Superman, batman, and other male heroes, Wonder Woman does the same thing but as a women, who represents an agent of power, rather than an object.
In response to this film I thought it was great to have a lead female character as the superhero versus a man which it usually is. In most movies, books, and more, men are usually the lead characters while women play more closely to sex objects or just “pretty faces”, women don’t typically play the important roles. In Wonder Woman it’s the opposite though, I felt like this film really brought to light the idea of power in women, something a lot of the time is focused primarily on men. They took a lead character, a hero, and made a film focusing on a woman. Although she does have a lot of skin showing in the film, I don’t necessarily think it would be objectifying her, the way I saw it was that it’s showing the power that can come of her body as a women and I think that’s important in itself. I thought this film was a great way to empower women and show them there is equality and power between men and women. I hope you have the time to watch the film or at least read about it, let me know any thoughts on it. -Kelly
