The movie Suffragette is inspired by true events, it focuses on the suffrage movement. The film focuses on a woman, Maud, who’s a working wife and mother that’s secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s suffrage movement. She becomes an activist alongside many other women. Police come in and force her and the other women underground, them against authorities. I’ve seen the “women against authority figures” before in readings in class, in history where women are targeted for expressing themselves and rights. This incident sparks debate across the nation. This film expresses the emotion and fragility of the risk’s women took for their rights and it shows the empowerment these women had in themselves and each other. They were frequent prisoners of their own intentions, and when I look back at this, I see how lucky I am to grow up in a society where women have rights. As a woman myself, this film made me appreciate women of our history and the sacrifices they made for all women to be here today, with rights. I recommend watching this film, it’s very perspective changing. -Kelly
