Summary:
The poem Infidelity by Louis Untermeyer is a short poem but one that delivers a very deep message with such little words. The poem starts off with the narrator addressing his cheating partner. He exclaims that this partner has not conquered him by cheating, what has gotten to him is the love they shared, The conflict that comes from what the partner did and the urge He still has for her. The narrator then takes a serious approach and takes shots at his cheating partner by saying, it is not “you i love” but the memory or form of previous lovers that came before her that gives her face such freshness like that of a new bride. The next part of the poem seems to be the narrator telling the partner what he will miss about her most, her name and hands. He goes on to say that though he will never speak her name again it will still lure him on. The last part of the poem the narrator basically says that he is being summoned by newness or that he has got a new hold on life. He then says how this new life has beauty with a lot of danger and grave.
Response: After reading this poem I can honestly say this poem was really well written and portrays the emotions a person feels when they’ve just found out their partner has been unfaithful. The first thing I really like is the fight that was shown with each line, he starts off strong by saying he has not been conquered, that line right there is just powerful. Literally taking the power away from the cheating spouse. The personal emotions and grit is what really captures the eye. The way he’s willing to make his spouse feel the pain he’s going through is just amazing. One example of this is when he tells her “It is not you I love—it is the formAnd shadow of all lovers who have died That gives you all the freshness of a warm and unfamiliar bride”. That line is a spit in the face, basically saying I don’t love , I love how you remind me of everyone that came before you. It doesn't matter who you are, those words can really get under your skin. The way that this poem is set up almost is like a guide for anyone to use who could possibly be in this situation. I'm not encouraging anyone to hurt someone's feelings but you also should let people walk over you know matter how much you love them.
